Building an ROI-based GIS Business Case & Strategy

Thu Jun 5 19:00 - 21:00
BCS London

Location(s)

Ross Smith and Jonathan Makin of PA Consulting, Denver will be delivering a presentation on a methodology developed by PA Consulting Group that enables GIS practitioners to build a robust Return on Investment (ROI) - based GIS Strategy.

In recent years there has been increasing pressure to improve business efficiencies, competitive advantage and resource utilisation. Whilst GIS technology is now mature the business aspects are paradoxically much less well developed. There are very few examples of the true business value of GIS projects, and no standardised methodology for estimating the value or return on investment of using GIS within organisations.

This presentation will provide an overview of a methodology developed by PA Consulting Group that enables GIS practitioners to build a robust Return on Investment (ROI) - based GIS Strategy and to establish the confidence with senior management that it can be delivered. The methodology will be published in August 2008 in a book co-authored by Ross and David Maguire of ESRI, and the presentation will be an invaluable introduction to the technique and will allow participants to assess where the benefits of the approach will lie in their workplace.

NB This event is free and open to members and non-members alike, but registration is required. If you would like to attend this event please register by sending an email to GSG.Event@Googlemail.com. As usual there will be opportunities for networking and refreshments will provided before and after the event.

Building an ROI-based GIS Business Case & Strategy

In recent years there has been increasing pressure to improve business efficiencies, competitive advantage and resource utilisation. Whilst GIS technology is now mature the business aspects are paradoxically much less well developed. There are very few examples of the true business value of GIS projects, and no standardised methodology for estimating the value or return on investment of using GIS within organisations.

This presentation will provide an overview of a methodology developed by PA Consulting Group that enables GIS practitioners to build a robust Return on Investment (ROI) - based GIS Strategy and to establish the confidence with senior management that it can be delivered. This end-to-end methodology was developed for GIS users who are seeking more sophisticated approaches to prioritising and targeting investment in GIS technology, proving where and how that investment will deliver tangible ROI to organisations, and addresses a means to winning the ‘hearts and minds’ of decision makers and stakeholders across the business.

In addition to helping to secure suitable budget, this methodology sets forth a framework for delivering successfully the benefits the ROI-based business case describes, ensuring sustainability of the GIS initiative and the success of the technology-related investment.

The sort of questions answered by the methodology include:
1)What value does a GIS program/project have for the business?
2)How much will it cost?
3)How long will it take?
4)Who will deliver it?
5)What’s the ROI?

The allocation of capital is largely driven by the questions above, but in our experience not solely. Business case development and portfolio management are a mixture of both art and science. The presentation will cover these topics and include insights from real-world applications of this approach.
In recognizing the value of this unique approach, ESRI Inc licensed the methodology and engaged PA to co-author a book titled “Proving the Business of GIS: An ROI Approach”, due out in August 2008. Ross Smith is one of the key contributing authors of this publication.

This presentation will be an invaluable introduction to the technique and will allow participants to assess where the benefits of the approach will lie in their workplace. Attendees will be provided access to a draft version of the book and accompanying toolkits at the presentation.
